Understanding Color Combinations
The colors you use in and on your sign are hugely important. Readability is the most important aspect of any banner. You have to make sure that the people passing by your banner will actually understand what you are trying to say. If you choose to mix a neon yellow with a fluorescent orange, that is simply not going to cut the mustard, so to speak. Sometimes simple is best and that is something that definitely needs to be taken into consideration when it comes to your color choices. Think of all the best advertisements you have seen. Most if not all of them are clean and simple. That does not mean they cannot be edgy and interesting. However, a mosaic of colors, while pretty, is not going to do you much good if no one can understand the point you are trying to get across.
When you are designing your vinyl banner, you definitely need to consider all of your color choices. You need to think about the color of the background, the colors comprising any graphics, the colors you use in your logo, and the color you want to use for your font.
Color is hugely important because you want something which will be eye catching and attention grabbing. At the same time, however, you have to walk a fine line and do a bit of balancing. You do not want some unsightly combination which is going to turn off potential customers. You need to make sure that your design pops, of course, but it cannot be too ostentatious.
There are plenty of places on the Internet where you can find lists of which colors complement each other. You want to choose a single, tasteful color scheme and then stick with it. Going all over the place with a lot of different schemes and palettes is just going to make the finished product look extremely messy, and that is not going to be good for business.
A color wheel can be very helpful when you are considering different color combinations. You want to choose colors which actually complement each other. You do not want them to fight, because then the eye will fight about what it wants to focus on when it looks at the design.
You want to avoid colors which are too loud or ostentatious. For example, green and blue are much too similar in hue to make a good color combination. That kind of mix will make the eye fight for focus. Plus, the sign will be difficult to read and understand. That is something to consider when putting together a graphic, a background, and a font face.
You do not want to choose bland and boring colors either. People will walk right by that. By the same token, they will hurry past a banner which features colors that are too flashy, just because such combinations can actually make your eyes hurt! That is the last thing you want, because no customer is going to be interested in what you are advertising.
