Resisting the Wind
When using outdoor banners, as we have mentioned, the wind can be your enemy. It is something you need to consider long and hard. You see, vinyl banners are not porous, and the banners here are not made of mesh. What that means, in terms of use, is that a vinyl banner is not going to just let the wind blow through it. It offers completely resistance because the material is so durable and strong. That is why you have to be so careful about where you put up your banner when you install it out of doors, and why you want to make sure you use something strong enough to resist the wind. Velcro, for instance, might not be the best idea for an out of doors banner, because a strong gust might send your sign ripping away from its moorings and flying to wherever the wind takes it.
With outdoor vinyl banners, you always want to be thinking about the weather. These signs are very weather resistant in terms of, for example, not being damaged by the rain or snow. Mostly, you want to make sure that they are protected from the wind. There are many aspects here that you need to protect the wind.
The main reason for this is that vinyl banners are not made of porous material, obviously. It is not like using a mesh banner. When they are outside, they will not bend to the wind because, clearly, the wind cannot blow through them.
You have to be careful about many things here. Just as a for instance, you cannot risk stringing your sign too tightly with rope or bungee cord, because then it will be fighting the wind, which can cause it to rip, tear, and wrinkle. There goes your investment, at least until a replacement banner arrives.
So, when considering just how to put up your banner outside, you definitely need to take the wind in consideration, especially when it comes to the materials you use. You may, for example, want to stay away from relying on Velcro – or at least relying solely on Velcro. The same goes for relying on adhesive tape. One good gust of wind could make your sign tear away from its moorings and send it flying away.
It will be better to brace and reinforce your outdoor sign with other materials. Bungee cords will offer less resistance to the wind, because they stretch. If your sign goes up in a very windy area, you might thus prefer the bungee cords to standard rope, which has no give. It is also important to consider cutting one to two inch slits in your banner. This will allow the wind room to pass through the vinyl, which will prevent it from being ripped and torn.
You also want to make sure not to tie anything too tightly, especially when it is secured from all four corners. You always want to make sure that there is a little give. That way, ripping and tearing will not be such a high risk.
