A MESSAGE FROM THE BANNER BARON
Here’s something that most Jeopardy contestants probably know that the rest of us don’t. After the Second Continental Congress approved a resolution of independence from Britain, John Adams wrote a letter to his beloved Abigail suggesting that “The second day of July 1776 will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America.” Huh? Seems that the vote took place on July 2nd but the document wasn’t actually signed until the 4th.
John Adams wrote his letter on the 3rd, with a prediction that was off by one day, but spot on with most of his other thoughts about future celebrations. “It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.” As you wish, Mr. Adams. And wishes you a Happy Fourth of July, America!
