The Big Sale.
You’ve sent out emails and mailers to your loyal customers to let them know about the great savings that await them, but what about everyone else?
Simply put, you need more foot traffic. No problem. With these retail sale sign ideas, you’ll be enticing more customers into your store in no time.
1. The Customer Comes First
Before we talk about specific signs, let’s talk content.
How many times have you walked past window signs that screamed, ”SALE!!! 50% OFF!!!”? Okay, but 50% off of what? What products are on sale?
Think about it from your customer’s point of view. They want to know what you have for them. They want to know about your products. Don’t make them piece it all together.
A sign that reads, “All Men’s Watches On Sale!” will have more impact for your customer. If they’re interested in the product, they’ll come in to see the price.
2. Put Your Best Foot Forward
While planning your sales displays, it’s important to ask yourself one question:
Am I showcasing the things my customers will want, or the things I want to get rid of?
Always put your most desirable products front and center. The last thing you want is for your potential foot traffic to see your display and think you’re having a rummage sale.
By thinking of the customer first, your displays will draw them in, not push them away.
3. Window Displays Aren’t Just for Holidays
If you’re lucky enough to have store front windows, you’ve got an ideal location to use a window display banner to advertise sales events and promotions..
When crafting a window banner , make sure your ad is plainly visible from across the street. Bold letters and contrasting colors are the name of the game.
Your products shouldn’t be “flat” with your signs. Think about depth. You want customers to be intrigued as they walk up from the sides, so your display can’t just work from the front.
Don’t forget to update your display often!
4. Go Big!
Do you need to draw more attention? Are you competing for foot traffic in a busy shopping center or during the holiday rush?
Then it’s time to go big. Get two of the tallest vertical banners your advertising budget will allow. They’ll only have one word: SALE!
This does not replace the need for signs with more specific information. The point here is to pull people in from across the street and through the crowd. You have to get them close enough to find out more.
By keeping the tall banners generic, you’re investing in the promotion of all of your sales going forward. Don’t forget to keep the background color consistent with your store’s aesthetic. Big doesn’t have to mean garish.
Does your city have rules against display signs of a certain size? Check the law carefully. Many cities allow such signs for 90 days or less. Plenty of time for most sales.
5. Be Charming, Not Loud
Above all, your signs should be a reflection of your brand. Does a giant inflatable clown flapping his arms fit in with your antique store? Probably not.
Instead of decorating your sidewalk with the biggest, brightest, loudest attention-getters you can find, aim for something more personally engaging. You’ve got tall banners flanking your entrance and an engaging window display. What more do you need?
How about a chalkboard A-frame sign right outside your front door? It’s the perfect opportunity for you to express yourself. Why should people come inside? Is your store cute? Clever? Funny? Classy?
Then pick up that chalk and tell your customers who you are with a joke, a great slogan, or a drawing. Remember, you just need them to be intrigued enough to step inside.
