Regardless of whether you are making a banner for a personal event or a business promotion, a banner’s purpose is to effectively communicate a specific message to a predetermined audience of people, and sizing your banners properly is one of the major factors that will determine how successful your banner displays will be.
We will break down the many variables that should be assessed when choosing a vinyl banner’s size in order to ensure the banners we print for your next event will be properly sized for maximum exposure at your venue.
Distance and Readability
You probably already know the indoor or outdoor location where you intend to display your banners at your next event, so assessing the average distance your target audience will be from the banners you intend to display is the first step when determining the size of your vinyl banners.
We recommend for every fifteen feet, your banner should increase in size by at least 2 feet in width and one foot in height. This does not mean that you can’t make a huge birthday banner for an interior wall space at a close quarters indoor birthday party. Our general sizing recommendation also does not imply that square banners are not effective. However, we do not recommend making a banner smaller than 2 feet by 2 foot even in a small fifteen foot space.
Environmental Sizing Factors & Sizing Examples
With the suggested size to distance ratio defined, measuring the distance between where your banners will be installed and where your average audience will be located is a good idea.
If your indoor banners will be hanging from an auditorium ceiling or in stadium rafters, assessing the distance from the banner’s intended location to the floor will help you calculate the minimum size needed to ensure your banners are visually effective.
Maybe you are planning to suspend your banners over a street for a outdoor festival. Determining the distance between your street banner’s location and your audience should also be measured, but figuring the speed by which your viewing audience is traveling can also help determine minimum sizing. As an example, street banners will be delivering its intended message to motorists that will be driving under your banners. Assessing the average speed of motorists passing by your banner’s intended location is also a good idea when determining size.
While you cannot exactly measure the distance from a far off building to walking and driving traffic in the city streets below, guesstimating the distance in order to properly size a large format banner or to advertise an apartment rental opportunity using a for lease building banner is also an effective way to estimate a minimum size.
Specialty Sized Banners
We know there are circumstances where the space to hang a banner may not include a large enough area to install the proper sized banner you may desire. We always recommend using the maximum area in a venue you can allocate for installing your banner displays. In these special cases where custom sizing may be needed, do not hesitate to contact our specialty banner orders department or make a note when ordering your banners for us to create any custom size you may need to maximize your banner’s exposure.
Big Banners are Always Better
As a rule of thumb, one can never go wrong by designing a banner larger than it may need to be, but ensuring your banners are not too small to effectively engage your audience is what is important when creating any banner for advertising or celebration.
We have incrementally sized our banners for your convenience in over 200 size variations ranging from small 2’X2′ to large banners at 10’X50′ in size. Although these are the default sizing options we have created, we are happy to assist with any specialty custom banner size that may be required for a specific space or venue.
