Four Types of Wayfinding Signs

Identification – This is the most common wayfinding sign. It tells you where you are (conversely, where you aren’t as well). One look is all you need to know if you’re in the right or wrong place. The best example of this is landmark signs that tell you that you’ve arrived at a specific location.

Directional – These signs help you get to your destination. The most common use for these is road signs. However, directional signs can also be used indoors to guide people to different locations or departments.

Informational – These wayfinding signs are similar to identification signs in that it shows you where you are. The difference is that informational signs go into detail about other relevant locations. This could be a ‘You Are Here’ legend map in a park or a building floor directory.

Regulatory – Regulatory signs display messaging to deter access to a location. These are often used for no parking signs, employee-only areas, or ‘Hazardous Materials Ahead’ signs.
